InFocus’s Aadhaar-enabled iris smartphone gets gov’t nod

U.S. handset maker InFocus is set to roll out a smartphone that can capture the iris image under different environments—including under direct sunlight.
The M425 smartphone, to be manufactured by Foxconn, features IriTech’s iris image quality assessment and on-board K7 generation algorithm to provide good quality images and avoid false positives while maximising true positive identification rates, according to the company. The embedded algorithm can complete an image capture and K7 image generation in less than 2 seconds.
Biometric data from the InFocus device gets encrypted by a Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) key at the chip level in device, which makes it impossible for anyone but the Aadhaar server to see the information, the company noted.
The device has recently been awarded the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) from the government of India. STQC validates the use of iris-recognition devices, used for biometric authentication linked under the Aadhaar project. The project aims to capture 2.4 billion Iris scans for biometric registration, making it the biggest biometrics project in the world.
"Based on the testing results done by STQC, InFocus smartphone has emerged as the most reliable and accurate biometric device with virtually zero error as FRR (false reject rate)," the company said.
The 4G-VoLTE smartphone will feature a 4.5in display, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage and expandable memory up to 64GB with microSD, and will be made available "in the next two to three months" at under ₹12,000, according to local media outlets.
"InFocus device will find its use as a secure and reliable biometric solution in various industries such as banking, E-PDS (Electronic Public Distribution System), MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural employment Guarantee Act) payments, E-governance services such as passport, taxation, healthcare and education. The solution will also enable government, enterprises and telecom companies to streamline the process of an individual’s authentication and eKYC regardless of language and literacy barriers," Sachin Thapar, country head of InFocus India, said in a statement.
