Tata Power Solar ramps up Bengaluru facility

The expansion and modernisation of Tata Power Solar's facility is in support of the Indian government's "Make in India" strategy of promoting domestic solar manufacturing, says the company.

Tata Power Solar has expanded and modernised its cell and module manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. This move is in line with the Government of India's progressive "Make in India" plan of domestic production of solar cells and modules with enhanced efficiency.

The two-stage expansion has doubled the company’s module capacity to 400MW from 200MW, and increased its cell manufacturing capacity by 65 per cent from 180MW to 300MW.

The company has also modernised and fully automated its entire manufacturing facility. According to Tata Power Solar, they were also able to ramp up to full capacity in record time, significantly better than global benchmarks, owing to their highly skilled and trained team and also improve efficiency of their modules.

"A robust domestic, qualitative manufacturing base is the backbone of any nation and is a strong foundation for long-term viability of sector. The gradual turnaround of the company and its expansion in capacity has been a hallmark achievement of Team Tata Power, when other sector players are still facing challenges of sustained economics," said Anil Sardana, Chairman, Tata Power Solar, as he talked about the expansion.

Ashish Khanna, Executive Director & CEO, Tata Power Solar, noted, "This expansion and modernisation has come on the backdrop of our landmark achievement on being the first Indian company to have shipped 1GW modules worldwide." Tata Power Solar has shipped 1GW modules to over 30 countries, according to the company.

The company claims the government’s renewable energy mission of 100GW by 2022 has given significant impetus to the industry.
