Apple to open two iOS app dev’t centres in India

Apple is setting up two facilities that will focus on developing features for its products while also helping home-grown developers create innovative mobile apps.

On Wednesday, the Apple CEO announced it is opening two new locations that will focus on developing features for its Apple products.

The first office is located in Hyderabad and will focus on the developing Apple Maps, which has remained a neglected feature in India and doesn’t offer the options—3D views, Flyover feature, options for shopping, coffee and restaurants, etc.—which Maps does in countries such as the United States, Europe, and China.

But it looks like Apple now plans to change all of this, starting with the dedicated development office for Maps in the country. Cook said the new facility, located on the Waverock campus, will provide an LEED-certified home for the expanding Maps team. The tech giant expects to create 4,000 jobs for the Hyderabad facility alone.

The second facility, on the other hand, aims to support engineering talent and accelerate growth in the local iOS developer community.

Apple's Design and Development Accelerator is expected to open in Bengaluru, where thousands of developers will make apps for iOS.

"India is home to one of the most vibrant and entrepreneurial iOS development communities in the world,” said Cook. “With the opening of this new facility in Bengaluru, we’re giving developers access to tools which will help them create innovative apps for customers around the world.”

Each week, Apple experts will lead briefings and provide one-on-one app reviews for developers. The facility will also provide support and guidance on Swift, an intuitive programming language created to build apps for iOS, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch. Swift enables developers to write safer, more reliable code, save time and create richer app experiences.

Bengaluru is now home to more technology start-ups with an estimated over 1 million people working in the tech sector. More than 40 per cent of graduates from local universities specialise in engineering or information technology.

The iOS App Design and Development Accelerator is expected to open in early 2017.
