Tata Power seeks renewable energy boost for Vietnam

The company is currently building the Long Phu 2 thermal power plant, which has a capacity of 1,320MW, in the Cuu Long Delta province of Soc Trang.

Tata Power has rolled out a plan to implement a renewable energy project in Vietnam's central province of Phu Yen, according to government officials.

Provincial People's Committee Vice Chairman Tran Huu The thanked the company for its commitment to investment in the region, telling its representatives that he is confident Tata Power will develop the renewable energy project successfully.

Tata Power was previously permitted by the central government of Vietnam to build the ₹13,598.97 crore ($2 billion) Long Phu 2 thermal power plant in the Cuu Long Delta province of Soc Trang. The Long Phu 2 plant, which has a capacity of 1,320MW, is expected to become operational in December 2020.

The announcement of a new renewable energy project in Vietnam comes several weeks after Tata Power set up a 3MW solar power plant at an ore mine in Noamundi. The project, which is the first of its kind in any ore mine in the country, will serve the company's captive requirement around its mining locations and will help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emission by about 3,000 tonnes per annum.

The Noamundi site covers 19 acres of land at an elevated reclaimed mining hill and has a potential of 4.5MW solar power generation, according to the company. Tata Steel will be the sole buyer at a contracted tariff.
